About the Opportunity

This is an open position with Ohio Edison, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp [OE].

This is a mobile (remote) position. The selected candidate may be located anywhere in the State of Ohio.

This position is responsible for providing the engineering and support necessary to ensure that all electrical equipment (substation, circuit, feeder, network, customer, etc.) is adequately protected from short-circuits and all other forms of electrical disturbances. The employee selected for this position will be responsible for the technical and business aspects of the planning and protection engineering for Ohio Edison Central/Eastern Ohio. The incumbent will also be responsible for ensuring the safety of FirstEnergy employees and the public through highly developed protection schemes.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Developing protective relay plans and issuing timely relay set-point job packages to the field for construction.
  • Ensuring coordinated isolation of electrical equipment to minimize customer outages for the company's distribution, sub-transmission and downtown network systems.
  • Working with FirstEnergy's relay setting system Powerbase database management, calculation of faults, evaluating and processing customer dispersed generation applications, evaluating over current protective device coordination using CYME time current curves (TCC) software and calculation of protective relay settings for electromechanical, electronic and state-of-the-art digital relays from Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL).
  • Providing timely comprehensive protection system analysis and technical written reports for management during major substation/customer outage events.
  • Working well with others while multi-tasking numerous complex projects simultaneously and keeping track of complex technical details.
  • Providing prompt technical support and analysis to the distribution control office (DCC) during major customer outage events.
  • Identify capacity and performance constraints on equipment, conductors, circuits and protection.
  • Analyzing the impact of new load and customer generation connections
  • Creating and maintain circuit models for distribution and capacity studies
  • Conducting research, solving complex problems and analyzing complex information.
  • Demonstrating a solid commitment to all aspects of safety, with maturity to exercise independent judgment on complex projects and assignments.
  • Assisting during storm events via storm analyst, hazard dispatch and/or hazard responding duties.
  • An employee hired at the Engineer IV level will be expected to perform all the above responsibilities with more proficiency, and in a more independent manner.
  • Further, the Engineer IV level employee will be assigned additional responsibilities related to those listed above.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors of Science degree in Engineering (BSEE, BSCE, BSME) from an ABET accredited institution is required. Acceptable alternatives are: (1) a Professional Engineer's (PE) License (2) a Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Civil or Mechanical Engineering or technical field of study (non-ABET) plus an advanced degree in Electrical, Civil or Mechanical Engineering from a university with an ABET accredited Bachelor's program.
  • Ability to work independently and in team environments.
  • Working knowledge of the company's transmission and distribution (T&D) construction and maintenance standards, practices, procedures, work methods, materials, equipment, and tools.
  • Solid computer skills with competency in Microsoft Office products, along with a working knowledge of geographic information system (GIS) software systems.
  • Understanding of CYME distribution analysis and CYMTCC technical software systems are a plus.
  • Ability to interpret detailed engineering drawings and schematics to a high degree.
  • Detail oriented, accurate and able to understand and interpret complex technical information.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state issued driver's license.
  • Play a contributing role to written technical substation outage reports and protection assistance to the dispatch office.
  • Possess strong knowledge, maturity and decision-making skills regarding electrical problems and analyzing complex information.
